![]() Going into the Book Club trimester, I didn't think that I would do well because I knew there was importance in participating during book discussions and other discussions. Being a minority and an introvert, I rarely feel comfortable sharing my personal thoughts, but every time I walked into that class, I knew that my voice would be heard and appreciated. My absolute favorite thing about the book club class is that it was always a safe environment for me to share my views and experiences. Before this class I thought I had set views on different topics, hearing different points of views has changed that. The conversations also taught me that my views will constantly change, and that’s okay. The conversations in this class inspired me to do extensive research on the current American government and different civil rights issues, which is an interest I did not know I had. It makes me thankful that Wellington has this class. Since I have taken this class, I am constantly shocked by how little some students, and even adults know about civil rights issues because they have never had the opportunity to learn about it. The topics discussed in this class are essential for every high school student to be informed on. This class inspired me to have many other courageous conversations outside of class with family members and friends. In this class I learned that not everyone will share the same views as me and taught me to accept that. I always surrounded myself with people that had mostly similar views to me. I will never forget the courageous conversations I had in this class because they left such a huge impact on me. It taught me that the point of having courageous conversations isn’t to convince the other person your side, but to share your point of view and learn from theirs. Practicing courageous conversations in book club taught me that discussions are much more effective when approaching a topic with a calm state of mind. The point of the conversation was not to get someone’s beliefs from point A to point B, but instead to be a place for myself and others to talk about important topics in a safe but challenging place. I enjoyed the courageous conversations I had because they did not have closure all the time or a “destination” to arrive to. Being educated on important topics is really vital to forming an opinion and also to taking action in the future. Bringing many people with different backgrounds and beliefs together also brings an immense amount of knowledge to be learned. I was able to learn a lot when I was participating in courageous conversations. ![]() Having facilitated conversations in the Book Club class allowed me to express my views in a safe space, but also challenged me to look at things from a perspective other than mine. Today, with everything going on, it is critical that we can have conversations civilly and although maybe we won’t agree with others, we have to respect them.Ĭourageous conversations have affected me for the better by giving a place to educate myself and express my beliefs peacefully. ![]() The best part of this specific conversation is that we came out of it closer than ever and with no hard feelings. We kept talking because we knew how relevant these topics were today. We kept our conversation going for almost 2 hours after class. I was in a group that carried on the conversation started in class after lunch. This class helped me find what I believe in. Before Book Club, I thought I wasn’t supposed to have my own opinions because I’m only 16. There is no way to go through life without having conversations and that’s why it’s essential that we were taught how to have them courageously. Having conversations with people is so important because everyone has their own story.

![]() The over-simplification filters out the forces of emotion and imagination that pervade the other versions. However, it just feels like a dumbed-down, sparknotes summary. I appreciate it’s clarifying power-if you had any open questions about the plot with respect to the previous versions, this one likely filled in those gaps. This version reads as if it is a regular modern fiction story. For they perished by their own madness, because they killed and ate the cattle of Hyperion the Sun-god, and the god took care that they should never see home again. He did his best, but he could not save his companions. ![]() He had travelled far in the world, after the sack of Troy, the virgin fortress he saw many cities of men, and learnt their mind he endured many troubles and hardships in the struggle to save his own life and to bring back his men safe to their homes. Rouse translation (1937) This is the story of a man, one who was never at a loss. Sometimes the strategic use of a preposition can make all the difference. Pope’s version somehow misses that nuance by saying he was safe with his friends. I like that Chapman emphasizes how Odysseus tried to save his friends but was unsuccessful. And yet, I can’t really declare a winner between the two yet. A voice that merely informs, on the other hand, just doesn’t convey that part of the message. There is a sense in which Pope improves upon Chapman’s version here by making the readers grasp not just what is being said, but how it is being said. Next. But whereas Lawrence throws all that at you in the beginning, Chapman savors it for the end. So, like Lawrence, he makes it clear that Homer is appealing to an outside, divine force. Even though it lacks Lawrence’s elaborate introduction to the muse in the opening lines, it makes up for it by the power of verse and the “deified Seed of Jove" reference at the end (Jove is the Roman word for Zeus). After getting the hang of it, I find myself singing it out loud, each time with more confidence and with more earnestness. Unlike Lawrence’s version, this one rhymes and thus makes you feel it as a song (even if you have to read it over a few times to get past the idiosyncrasies of the Early Modern English language). Chapman’s translation is the oldest English version of the Odyssey. Tell us, as others, deified Seed of Jove. Well, if the father of epic poetry prayed to the gods for some help, and the prayer was granted, what’s stopping the rest of us from doing the same thing? Nothing! Sudoku games were introduced in Japan five years later, where the number puzzles became immensely popular and were officially coined 'Sudoku.' In 2004, The Times in London published its first daily Sudoku, reintroducing the Sudoku puzzle to Western culture. His Sudoku used a 9x9 square, and all rows and columns needed to contain the numbers 1-9. These number puzzles disappeared around World War I, but reemerged in 1979 when an Indiana man named Howard Garns published the first modern Sudoku puzzle. The rows and columns did, though, add up to the same number. The number puzzles were not the exact same as sudoku, though, because they contained some double-digit numbers and did not have sub-squares. Video production is complicated, especially when releasing video on a streaming platform with a global reach. But the English Closed Captions are transcribed from the dubbed English audio. ![]() The English subtitles are usually translated from the original audio. It is more likely to see both options on videos that have been dubbed in English. When would you see both English and English CC? There are different ways for audiences to enjoy media in other languages, and dubbing can help if no subtitle track is available. Dubbing is often used in video localiz a tion. They are a translation of the original language subtitles.Įnglish CC is often created by transcribing what is said in the English dubbed version. What are the differences between English subtitles and English CC?Įnglish subtitles will be more accurate to the original language subtitles. And if you are wondering why they are closed captions, here is a comparison between open and closed captions. Whatever audio information the audience needs to appreciate the tension, humor, or drama of a piece of content is supposed to be included in closed captions. Viewers sometimes need to know when someone knocks on a door, if a car pulls up, or if a floorboard creaks. Closed captions also include sound descriptions for plot-important noises. This is especially helpful if characters move off-screen, have their mouth covered, or are speaking back and forth rapidly. For example, speaker tags can help identify which person is speaking. What are closed captions (CC)?Ĭlosed captions (CC) have more information to help viewers who are deaf or hard of hearing enjoy the video. And for translated subtitles, they are meant to preserve that speech across language barriers and make content enjoyable for local audiences. Subtitlers assume that the audience can hear the audio and so the final product doesn’t include other sounds or identifying information like which character is saying which line. Subtitles are specifically meant to represent the speech in the video. Where do these tracks come from and what are they used for? Answers to these questions and more below! What are subtitles? Let’s take an example like Netflix’s Squid Game, which has two different English subtitle tracks: English subtitles and English CC. That’s what we are here to help you feel confident choosing subtitles. After settling in to explore a title in another language, it’s time to figure out which set of subtitles to use. This feature allows users to filter by original language, audio language, or subtitle language. Some platforms like Netflix have gotten attention for their search by language feature. In the perturbation treatment, the zeroth-order Hamiltonian of the molecular junction is composed of independent single-impurity Anderson's models, which act as the channels where charges come through or occupy, and the interactions between different channels are treated as the perturbation. ![]() The salt bridge consists of an intermediate compartment filled with a concentrated solution of KCl and fitted with porous barriers at each end.We study charge transport through molecular junctions in the presence of electron-electron interaction using the nonequilibrium Green's function techniques and the renormalized perturbation theory. In the simplest cells, the barrier between the two solutions can be a porous membrane, but for precise measurements, a more complicated arrangement, known as a salt bridge, is used. Since negative ions tend to be larger than positive ions, the latter tend to have higher mobilities and carry the larger fraction of charge. More detailed studies reveal that both processes occur, and that the relative amounts of charge carried through the solution by positive and negative ions depends on their relative mobilities, which express the velocity with which the ions are able to make their way through the solution. Thus an excess of Cu 2 + in the left compartment could be alleviated by the drift of these ions into the right side, or equally well by diffusion of nitrate ions to the left. ![]() This ionic transport involves not only the electroactive species Cu 2 + and Zn 2 +, but also the counterions, which in this example are nitrate, NO 3. This means that we must provide a path for ions to move directly from one cell to the other. In order to sustain the cell reaction, the charge carried by the electrons through the external circuit must be accompanied by a compensating transport of ions between the two cells. These violations of electroneutrality would make it more difficult (require more work) to introduce additional Zn 2 + ions into the positively-charged electrolyte or for electrons to flow into right compartment where they are needed to reduce the Cu 2 + ions, thus effectively stopping the reaction after only a chemically insignificant amount has taken place. Positive charge (in the form of Zn 2 +) is added to the electrolyte in the left compartment, and removed (as Cu 2 +) from the right side, causing the solution in contact with the zinc to acquire a net positive charge, while a net negative charge would build up in the solution on the copper side of the cell. The need for this can be understood by considering what would happen if the two solutions were physically separated. A current of one ampere corresponds to the flow of one coulomb per second.įor the cell to operate, not only must there be an external electrical circuit between the two electrodes, but the two electrolytes (the solutions) must be in contact. When we measure electric current, we are measuring the rate at which electric charge is transported through the circuit. For most purposes, you can simply use 96,500 Coulombs as the value of the faraday. Careful experiments have determined that 1 F = 96467 C. The amount of charge carried by one mole of electrons is known as the Faraday, which we denote by F. By placing an ammeter in the external circuit, we can measure the amount of electric charge that passes through the electrodes, and thus the number of moles of reactants that get transformed into products in the cell reaction.Įlectric charge q is measured in coulombs. By connecting a battery or other source of current to the two electrodes, we can force the reaction to proceed in its non-spontaneous, or reverse direction. If we place a variable resistance in the circuit, we can even control the rate of the net cell reaction by simply turning a knob. The reaction can be started and stopped by connecting or disconnecting the two electrodes. \]īut this time, the oxidation and reduction steps (half reactions) take place in separate locations:Įlectrochemical cells allow measurement and control of a redox reaction ![]() eVitamins assumes no liability for inaccuracies or misstatements about products.Į, © Copyright 2023. Studies show that CBD has a calming effect and reduces anxiety without affecting sleep-wake cycles. ![]() Like THC, CBD interacts with the body's endocannabinoid system (ECS) except CBD acts as an antagonist, meaning it blocks the receptors in the brain and causes feelings of relaxation among other things. CBD is a non-mind-altering cannabinoid that promotes relaxation and, unlike THC, can be legally sold across the United States when extracted from hemp, a variety of cannabis that contains less than 0.3% THC.ĬBD is also an essential component of medical marijuana a specific form of CBD ( Epidiolex) is approved by the Food and Drug Administration for use against seizures. Plenty of products have hemp-derived CBD in their formulation. To prevent this from happening, think about switching to using CBD instead.Ĭannabidiol (CBD) is a particularly well-known cannabinoid which is more prevalent in hemp than marijuana. If you're constantly feeling fatigued or getting too sleepy after using cannabis, it could be because you're using strains with high THC content. That said, there are hundreds of these available, so you really want to research the cannabinoid and terpene content of each one. Using Sativa-dominant strains may help you feel productive and creative, as opposed to relaxed and lethargic. Sativa strains, meanwhile, are more associated with the so-called “mind high” which produces an energizing, anxiety-reducing effect. Indica strains are typically the ones you want to stick to when it comes to sleep. There's an entire debate going on around this, but the bottom line is they all derive from the Cannabaceae family of plants.Ĭannabis strains have similar characteristics to each other but may contain differing amounts of cannabinoids or terpenes based on how they're cultivated. The three main subspecies are C annabis sativa, Cannabis indica, and Cannabis ruderalis, although some would argue only the first two are the real main ones. Remember, marijuana is an umbrella term, and there are many different kinds of cannabis available. As it turns out, they're not all great for keeping you awake, and alert.Ĭannabis comes in many varieties and subspecies. Individually, there are many terpenes that have advantageous effects as well, so in terms of importance, they're not that far behind cannabinoids. There's also a theory that terpenes help enhance the effects of cannabinoids in a so-called entourage effect. While terpenes won't get you high in a traditional sense, some are still considered psychoactive because they affect your brain. Terpenes potentially work in synergy with cannabinoids and other cannabis plant compounds to produce psychoactive effects. Terpenes play an important role in the aroma and flavor of a cannabis strain, the different combination of terpenes for each cannabis strain explains why they each have different scents and effects. Aside from cannabinoids, cannabis contains over 400 terpenes or aromatic compounds that have varying effects on the human brain. When you smoke cannabis, it's really hard to determine what kind of effects you will get unless you get it from a dispensary that tells you specifically how much the concentrations of each compound there are. One study found that 70% of young smokers use marijuana to help them fall asleep. It's actually a pretty common occurrence. So, is it weird to use weed as a sleep aid? Not really. But THC is also one of the compounds that contain sedative effects that allow you to fall asleep faster after a smoking session. THC is responsible for marijuana's psychoactive effects, meaning that this compound, in particular, is the one that gets you "high" when you smoke or ingest weed. Certain cannabinoids are also said to help with anxiety and chronic pain. ![]() Some have sedative effects, others have anti-inflammatory effects. These cannabinoids interact with the cell-signaling nerves in your body and have different effects depending on the concentration of compounds in the products. Cannabis contains over 400 chemical components, more than 70 of which are aptly called cannabinoids. One of the benefits of marijuana use revolves around its effect on sleep. When the harvested flowers are dried and smoked or ingested some other way (in gummies or other edible forms), it has the capacity to get you "high." However, it also has a variety of pro-health properties which is why so many people are rallying to have it legalized. Weed, or more formally, marijuana, is a plant with psychoactive properties. Before we dive here, let's take a look at what smoking weed actually entails. ![]() How does Dollar Card Club membership work? Life is busy!
